Our outdoor classroom at Macskimming Outdoor Education Centre has over 425 acres to explore! Our site is diverse and includes; wetland, agricultural fields, red maple swamps and mixed mature forests.
Registration for our Fall 2024 program is now open! This season, we are offering a five-week Writing Wild program for children ages 9-14 from October to November.
Writing Wild is designed to instruct students in the art of creative writing in a forest school setting. This course is conducted using a variety of teaching methods including discussions, lecture and hands-on application of techniques. Students will also participate in free play, hikes, games, nature art, cooking over a campfire, and sit spots. They will also have the opportunity to share their stories around a campfire (if they wish).
Don't worry if your child struggles with reading or writing. They will be able to participate in all the units through drawing and oral storytelling.
Before opening Wild Roots in 2016, I worked as a journalist. My news, sports and entertainment stories have been heard over the airwaves in Ottawa (CIDG), Moncton, New Brunswick (CFQM) and Smithers, British Columbia (CFBV). I have been published in the Ottawa Citizen, Ottawa Family Living Magazine and Fifty-Five Plus Magazine. My debut novel, Summer at Pine Lake, was published by Evernight Teen in September 2023.
I’m excited to announce Writing Wild will also include a workshop taught by our mentor, Suzanne Whiteduck. Suzanne is Anishinabe from Nipissing First Nation. Suzanne, her husband Dylan, and their daughter Charlotte live in Dylan’s community of Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg. Suzanne is a work from home mom and is passionate about sharing her story of Indigenous motherhood. Suzanne has also written essays that are featured on the Wild Roots blog and Instagram page.
It's important to note, this course is not about correct spelling and grammar. It's about connecting to the forest and inviting nature to inspire our creativity!
